Helping Children Settle In
Some children find separation from their parents more difficult than others; therefore an agreed settling-in period is essential.
- It is important for me to find out as much as i can about a child – likes, dislikes etc. This will help settle them into my home in the quickest possible time.
- It is advisable for children to have pre-visits, first with a parent, and then short stays alone. This will help children get used to me and my home.
- I understand that the child may be feeling anxious and I will give them constant reassurance.
- To avoid the child experiencing feelings of abandonment it is advisable for parents to say goodbye properly, then leave. The child will then learn that Mummy or Daddy will be back. It is my experience that sneaking off instead of “upsetting” the child has a negative effect.
- I have a four week settling in period, during which time the contract can be ended by either party without notice.
